He sucked in a sharp, sudden breath as if he had been struck, eyes wide and jaw slack, and stared at her. That -- that didn't make sense. Joseph wouldn't do that. He was his brother and even if he wasn't he had an obligation to the family as a whole, didn't he? He wouldn't have acted against them. He wouldn't have acted against him when he'd done nothing wrong. He wouldn't.

"You're lying," he hissed when the moment passed, but there was a note of uncertainty in his tone. He didn't think Lydia would lie to him any more than he thought his brother would have him murdered.
