In spite of his arguments on his brother's behalf, there was fear and uncertainty both running under Samuel's skin as she touched him. He didn't want to believe her, wanted to continue thinking that his brother was the best of them all, but why else would Joseph have sent Arnold back in time if not to kill him? Why else would he have done so many of the things he'd done lately? It brought everything into a new light -- made Joseph's actions make sense even if there was no reason to the motive behind them -- and it frightened him.

"I'll be fine," he told her in spite of that undercurrent of terror. "He wouldn't -- if you're right, he wouldn't dare do anything to me where everyone could see."
